Campaign A1 - A2: Stansberry ============================ Summary: First check on health and operability of MIPS post-launch. Activities include: Power-on; Electronics, FPA, anneal heater, and CSMM Aliveness (10, 15). CE Temperature Monitoring (92) Telescope Background Measurement (950) Shutdown (90, 95) After campaign A1 we'll know if all basic functions of MIPS still work. The rail-to-rail test in 15 will give us our first look at the shorting situation for the 160um readouts. Campaign A2 just finishes shutting down after a long (1.5 day) CE temperature monitoring task. A failure in any of tasks 10, 15, 90, 95 would be critical. A failure in 950 should be tracked down, but is probabably not critical. Need to close loop w/ SSC & JPL to make sure this happens - particular problem for AORs. IERs have a flag to denote expedited downlink. Do we want to add Plug-n-Plays for these campaigns? Focus task? Another 24um Flat? [Want to add mips-115 to D1 after 950, before 990, and delete it from E.] MIPS-110: Failure is critical - the SUR algorithm must be verified, as most 24um science data will be SUR. IER listed in cookbook is different from the linked version (6.1.2 vs. 6.5.2, only 1 second difference in execution time) Why is there a HUGE (13.5 hours!!) slew tax in the newer version of the IER???? MIPS-121: Sensitive to the possible lack of pointing information? (Cluster mode obs.) MIPS-115 listed as a dependency, but this does not occur until one day later in Campaign E! Results are very dependent on good flats, the very first of which will be obtained concurrently. The same task is in campaign E; however, there is not enough time (1 day) in which to make substantive changes, should a failure occur here. MIPS-125: Failure is critical, since it affects the entire 24um calibration. Voffsets can be checked in contingency by using other data; however, no appropriate RAW data will be taken until task 110 4 days later (there are no RAW darks, though). MIPS-320: The AOR included in the cookbook is from Aire version 6.1, while the linked version is from 6.2. MIPS-100 is listed as a dependency - is this really necessary? Is first light actually crucial to anything else? Not entirely clear why an additional 3 cycles of 3s exposures will be taken. Is this just to confirm that the # of cycles parameter operates correctly? MIPS-917: Why is this 2 separate tasks? The positions are the same. Exceeds allotted time. The focus check is placed last to maximize settling time. Other than that, there is no compelling reason for any of the task ordering in this campaign, so we can shuffle the tasks to reduce slew overheads. Comments on the campaign as a whole: The work load looks to be very well distributed in this campaign. We seem to be well prepared for the required analysis. I see no trouble spots. Task mips-120 depends on several calibration tasks. It has a 72h turnaround time. The flats will be available after 24-48h. The darks and scattered background monitor each require 24h. These timings seem plausible, and they work well together. Comments on individual tasks: mips-950: I thought this task included a short exposure on the sky prior to the dark measurements. That still seems like a good idea. The 160 darks are in 70um SED mode and 24um sky; the 24um darks are in 70um NF mode and 160um sky. It might prove hard to get George's attention for modeling during IOC, so I would recommend getting him to run his radiometric models ASAP to predict 24um, 70um, and 160um backgrounds as a function of telescope temperature. mips-910: The two data sets should prove useful and interesting. It will be interesting to see how different the darks prove to be based on how many DCEs have been collected since the boost frame. I doubt that the dark current will come from the 35 DCEs and the read noise from the 50 DCEs. It seems more likely that all 85 DCEs will prove useful for both dark current and read noise. Scattered light will be an issue for the 24um darks. As part of the analysis, we probably need to compare the ground-based darks with the sky darks to measure and correct for scattered light. Getting a measure of the scattered light levels should be a high priority. If both this task and mips-950 included a short sky exposure, and if the data were collected with different pointings, we could probably get a very good measure of the scattered light levels. mips-917: Good cook. Good cookbook. mips-115: This task includes observations of the two 24um stims in both LOW and HIGH brightness modes. The latter will produce saturation, which might have some impact on the subsequent stim calibration task. I question whether we need the HIGH stim level observations since this is primarily a stim aliveness test. If we want to check the commanding, we can leave the HIGH stim observations in place. We should compare the stim brightnesses with the brightnesses measured during ground testing. I can provide numbers from appropriate ground tests. The 1h turnaround time is reasonable. [ MOVE TO D1. If not moved, delete HI Stim setting, and/or make it the last task.] mips-120: Are there any timing constraints on this task relative to the start of the campaign and relative to the 24um thermal anneal? In the analysis for this task, how important is it to get a handle on the scattered light levels in the 24um dark? mips-121: The 72h turnaround time does not seem excessive since this task depends on several other tasks that have 24-48h turnaround time. The only thing that might be considered missing is the 24um dark as a calibration dependency - the dark current isn't large enough to affect PSF measurements over most of the field, but there are a few clusters of hot pixels which might be enough to bias PSF measurements nearby. mips-245: The cookbook outlines the required data-taking procedure, but without the IER I had to guess at the total time required. Campaign scheduling notes: There are two primary activities in this campaign. One is a very thorough investigation of calibration using standard activities, the other is a set of focal plane surveys. For the calibration tasks, I used the standard startup sequence as much as possible. I put the Phot versions of the 24um flat, 70um IC, and 160um IC in sequence right after the Scan versions of each task. This maximizes efficiency and provides the best comparison between the two techniques. The extra time required is not that large, so the timing of the calibration activities is not altered much compared to the standard startup. After the first anneal, I broke from the usual startup sequence by running the set of MIPS-601 tasks immediately after MIPS-924. I jumped from there to MIPS-922, postponing MIPS-920 until later. This puts MIPS-922 at very nearly the usual timing after the thermal anneal. Both of these Ge calibration sequences are completed before much cosmic ray damage has accumulated. The next task is the 24um flux standard. This is very different timing from the usual startup sequence, but that should not be an issue at 24um this long after the initial powerup. The 70um NF FPS was placed next, partly because the pointing is likely to be similar to that of the flux standards but mostly because it fit nicely into the available time. This task is run between 2-4h after the thermal anneal, which is very good timing. The task starts about 5h after startup, which ought to be sufficient to reach temperature stability. A thermal anneal prepares the 160um array for MIPS-234. This task is long enough that it really needed to be run right after a thermal anneal. The SED slit location task will have similar pointing and will work well between 3-4.5h after the anneal. The frame table update comes next and was placed here to avoid interfering with any of the other calibration activities. The campaign ends with a repeat of the Ge flux standard calibration activities, starting with a thermal anneal and following the same sequence as was used earlier. This cycle of calibration tasks starts about 7.5h after the start of the first set, so we have a decent timeline for looking for changes. Comments on the campaign as a whole: Karl G. melded task mips-601 into mips-600. I need to redo the campaign structure to include this change. He eliminated the whole stability check portion of the test so the mips-600 tasks can probably be all put in sequence now. Almudena has a lot of flatfielding tasks in this campaign. They have a 24-48h turnaround time, and the results are needed for the analysis of other tasks. She should get help from team germanium and team silicon so that we can turn these data around quickly. She identifies Dave F and Eiichi as data monkeys for the Ge tasks, Casey and Susan for the Si. It would be a good idea to check priorities of the dependent tasks so that she can prioritize her analysis. I don't see any critical 24um tasks, so the Ge analysis should come first. We do lots of calibration tasks in this campaign. Chad needs the darks, flats, and ICs for his flux calibration. Jocelyn needs the Ge darks and ICs for her FPS tasks. Since they are needed for the FPS analysis, we need quick turnaround on the Ge calibration tasks. Comments on individual tasks: mips-912: We only measure 10s darks with 5s resets. When do we determine whether those darks are adequate or if we also need 3s and 4s darks? Do we have enough margin to do the fancier darks? Do we have an IER prepared that would give us the complete set of darks? The cookbook should include a link to the ground-based read noise test results. Will we do any measurements to determine the scattered light levels in the darks? If we do it right, that will come from the scattered background monitor, mips-950. mips-911: As with mips-912, will the 10s darks be adequate? The IER has us doing 70dark1 RN, 70dark2 RN, 70dark1 DarkCur, 70dark2 DarkCur. Is this the right order? We will have big sky latents that might be worse than the stim latents. Do we need any pauses before starting the read noise measurement? Would we be better off doing 70dark1 dark, 70dark1 RN, 70dark2 dark, 70dark2 RN? mips-080, the 70um dark position test, doesn't happen until campaign O. Is that soon enough? What will we do if these dark measurements are inadequate? I assume that we will use ground darks. The cookbook should include a link to the ground-based read noise test results. mips-924: This task lists a turnaround time of 48h. It depends on the 160um IC, which has a 24-48h turnaround time. Other tasks depend on this one. Will Eiichi be available as a data monkey on this task, given that he is working with Almudena on the ICs? Check whether KG and JS are available to help CE as monkeys or if they have other tasks. mips-600: The IERs currently loaded cover 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0. We want 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 4.0. mips-922: This task runs for 6.6m. Chad points out that we will need to use 10s DCEs if we use a fainter star, increasing the runtime to 11.55m. The version that includes NF and SED runs 22.5m. We are collecting a NF IC in this campaign, so will we do the NF flux cal here? This task uses darks and ICs, yet has a turnaround time of 24h. That quick turnaround is not necessary because we do not use these results in this campaign. mips-920: This task runs for 8.2m. Chad points out that we will need to use 10s DCEs if we use a fainter star, increasing the runtime to 13m. This task uses darks and flats, yet has a turnaround time of 24h. That quick turnaround is not necessary because we do not use these results in this campaign. mips-137: No turnaround time is listed here. What is the need time? This task does not list the 70um darks or the 70um NF IC as calibration needs, but they must be needed. Can we meet the need time given the dependence on these calibration tasks? This is the second of two times of running this task (also in campaign I). In the cookbook, the DAT reduction is listed as one step with no details. Jane is the only AZ person listed as a data monkey. Will she be able to handle all of the data from all of these FPS tasks, or should we identify Team Ge as data monkeys for all of these FPS tasks? Are they needed before we finish the darks and ICs, or do they start their work once those results are available? mips-234: See my comments on mips-137. Also, I am very confused by the IER. It appears that DCEs are being taken in pairs, with stim flashes on one of the two DCEs. Yet relpos1 and relpos2 are not the same. Is this what we want? In Jocelyn's cookbook, it implies that the dark comes first, then the stim flash. This also seems improbable. This cookbook was clearly copies from mips-139 and still retains references to the SED position. mips-139: See my comments on mips-137. I am again confused by the IER. Campaign K: Muzerolle ===================== Summary: Most activities are repeats of those in previous campaigns, such as routine darks and scan and photometry flats for each array. Target included in IER, but not specified in cookbook. mips-133: Under-budget by over 2 hours. No calibration dependencies given - again, must need good flat. Target included in IER, but not specified in cookbook. Has it been vetted for background? mips-150: Includes obs. of 70um WF phot., scan, TP, and SED, but what about fine scale? Cookbook needs a bit more detail. The only task dependency listed is MIPS-322 (70um phot valid.), but it must also need phot. validation for the other 2 arrays, plus scan map, TP, and SED mode AOT validation. mips-305: Any task dependencies? Probably need to have the routine scan flats for comparison. Cookbook asks what the header keyword for the scan mirror position is. Is flat test using standards necessary for this task (i.e., comparing the flat per mirror position to the nominal flat may be all that is required here)? If so, cookbook needs to specify standard star datasets to be used (probably the flux standards taken during this campaign are sufficient). mips-306: Same comments as 305. mips-307: Same comments as 305. mips-317: Under-budget by over 6 hours. Why are the 2 maps at the cross-scan position of the bright source done with medium scan rate, while the rest is fast? This task overlaps somewhat with the ultimate scattered light task (mips-340), which maps a much smaller region (~15') around a bright source . mips-328: Target is a GTO target - conflict? Visibility ends 1 month after the nominally-scheduled time. For the 6-deg. leg scan, will there be enough sources far from cluster to accurately compute positions along entire scan leg? Target should be changed to a calibration source to verify our sensitivity in this mode, and avoid GTO conflicts. mips-920-924: Are there previous tasks that check any dependencies of the flux conversion factor with exposure time? mips-930: Are the five sets of this listed after MIPS-317 supposed to be interspersed with that task? And similarly for the three sets listed after MIPS-328? The last one, before MIPS-131_Q, doesn't seem necessary, since there is no further Ge data taken. IER only does 160um. Need to add a mips-313 70um NF illumination correction, and mips-299 SED IC, to support task mips-922 and the EROs. Campaign scheduling notes: This campaign is full of long tasks, most of which have to be placed in separate anneal cycles. The campaign starts with the standard calibration activities. We need to run the 24um FPS immediately after that, followed by a downlink, to provide the required two days of analysis time for the FPS data. After the downlink, the structure of the rest of the campaign is pretty arbitrary. The latent image study is very important, so I placed that next. A thermal anneal is needed before the start of this task, and another one is needed about halfway through this 5h task. The 24um saturation test is placed next because we will already be pointing towards a region with bright sources, probably at low Galactic latitude. To reduce pointing overheads and as a concession to our star formation crew, I am scheduling the two proto-stellar object observations next. Each is given its own anneal cycle since that is how they are likely to be scheduled in routine ops. MIPS-315 comes next after the proto-stellar objects. It involves observations of standard stars against a variety of backgrounds. It will involve a lot of pointing overheads and will not necessarily start at low Galactic latitude, so placing it here is not necessarily an optimization. One agreement I made with Chad is for him to structure the task so that he doesn't need a thermal anneal in the middle of the task. Most of the rest of the tasks were placed in their own anneal cycle. I did this because we will probably want to look at the 160um data from these tasks and no pair of tasks can be completed within the maximum of 3 hours that we want between 160um anneals. The array geometry task is one of the shortest remaining tasks and it acts as a good spacer to put the 70um dark test a little while after an anneal. MIPS-340 is a 24um task, so there is no problem with placing it next. I placed the 24um PSF task last mostly because it is extremely long. We can eliminate the final thermal anneal. Comments on the campaign as a whole: Nothing we are doing here is urgent. The turnaround times are fairly irrelevant. The work load all seems manageable. I have no idea whether we will fit within the campaign boundaries since so many of the tasks are undefined. Comments on individual tasks: mips-155: The task title reads "24um Detector Response to Stims" mips-315: This cookbook is very sketchy and has a few errors. When Chad gets a chance to work on it, I am sure that he will tighten it up. mips-340: Something is terribly wrong with mips_ier340.exp. The header implies a runtime of about 11m, but the expansion section shows a runtime of 18h24m16s. The problem appears to be a slew tax of 65642.852s. mips-290: Do 1/2 array offsets. mips-500: EROs in this campaign are: Vega (58) Stapelfeldt S/W-1 (16) Stansberry Ceph E (10) Alberto Cam 1 (30) James M.
