Sequencer Site SIRTF IOC Activity c. 2002

CAID: MIPS-121 Title: 24 um Focus Confirmation

System: MIPS Principal: krs Deputy: dhines
Objective:
Evaluate focus of 24um channel of MIPS at the
nominal secondary position post-launch.
Necessary test before status of SIRTF focus
is
declared.

Description:
The 24um focus test uses a standard 1x3
raster map
in photometry mode with 1/8 array row
steps and 3 sec DCE's. This will provide
good
sampling of the PSF with high signal to
noise.
Three stars (listed below) will be observed to
hedge against possible (as yet unknown)
debris
signatures which would artificially extend the
PSF.

HD 158460 A1V
HD 162004 G0V
HD 158485 A4V

Including slew time, the observations will
consume
approximately 32 minutes of wall clock.

Accurate flat fields are essential for proper
assessment of the PSF/focus.

Day:   33.0770833333372 Suggested Order:   D200

Must be preceded by these activities (list by CAID):   MIPS-100

Place in Schedule:   After aperture cover is opened. Accurate flat fields are essential for proper assessment of the PSF/focus.

Priority:   Critical

Conditions

Maximum telescope temperature: 33 K

Minimum telescope temperature: 5.5 K

Should activity be repeated if focus changes?   Yes     Repeat if focus changes by 0 mm

Maximum absolute pointing uncertainty: 10 arcsec (1 sigma radial)

Maximum precision offset uncertainty: 5 arcsec  (1 sigma radial)

Observatory configuration:

Go/No Go criteria:

Resources

Duration:   32 minutes

Real time downlink:   No

Data Volume (uncompressed): 136 Mbits

List Blocks, AORs, SERs, IERs, or unique sequences required (uplink): Use photometry AOT

List Analysis tools required (downlink):   24um pipeline high S/N flat fields (>300:1)

Outcome

Estimate of data turn around:   72 hours

Description: Will know if MIPS 24 micron array is in focus. Focus will be judged by the contrast between the peak and first Airy ring in comparison to predicted values.

Can proceed in parallel with other activity: No

Must outcome be confirmed before next activity: Yes

Method of Confirmation:   Comparison of observed PSF with predicted PSF from STiny TIM. Also evaluate via cross-correlation method developed for IRAC.

Success criteria: Must execute before secondary move.

Contingency plan:  Repeat if test fails. If star is not in focus, comparison with other data from IRAC will be required to understand the relative focus positions. Compare with 70um focus check.
