Sequencer Site SIRTF IOC Activity c. 2002

CAID: MIPS-145 Title: SED Mode Wavelength Calibration

System: MIPS Principal: psmith Deputy:
Objective:
To confirm the wavelength calibration of the MIPS
SED mode.

Description:
Two cycles of the SED AOT will be executed on four
targets, 2 each of planetary nebulae
(bright line at 63 microns) and HII regions
(bright line at 88 microns).
This will confirm both the
zero point and the dispersion of the SED mode.
Two different wavelengths are necessary to check
the dispersion, and duplicate targets are
required
to guard against poor (or no) detections in one
source. Ideally, the sources for this
observation
should be extended by at least a few arcminutes on
the sky.

Day:   53.2055555555562 Suggested Order:   K100

Must be preceded by these activities (list by CAID):   MIPS-139, MIPS-300

Place in Schedule:   After dust cover off and slit location determined.

Priority:   Critical

Conditions

Maximum telescope temperature: 12 K

Minimum telescope temperature: 5.5 K

Should activity be repeated if focus changes?   No     Repeat if focus changes by 0 mm

Maximum absolute pointing uncertainty: 5 arcsec (1 sigma radial)

Maximum precision offset uncertainty: 3 arcsec  (1 sigma radial)

Observatory configuration: standard

Go/No Go criteria: CSMM and CE nominal.

Resources

Duration:   40 minutes

Real time downlink:   No

Data Volume (uncompressed): 80 Mbits

List Blocks, AORs, SERs, IERs, or unique sequences required (uplink): SED AOT

List Analysis tools required (downlink):   Standard analysis tools like IRAF and IDL.

Outcome

Estimate of data turn around:   48 hours

Description: Spectra of 2 different kinds of sources will provide spectral lines at 2 different wavelengths which will be used to confirm the zero point and dispersion of SED mode.

Can proceed in parallel with other activity: No

Must outcome be confirmed before next activity: No

Method of Confirmation:   Data analysis

Success criteria: The 4 spectra give consistent results for zero point and dispersion.

Contingency plan:  Repeat with another HII region or PN, integrate longer.

Additional Comments:
Since the SED mode will not be immediately released, this test can be delayed until after IOC. IOC critical (N) S/C pointing understood to <3" (TBR) and stable to 0.5" in 500 sec (TBR) For 70 um performance, the backgrd radiance must be less than 1.0E-12 W/cm2/sr (< 12 K). Need suitable HII region in OPZ. Candidates for a December launch are NGC 7538A, NGC 3576, NGC 3603, NGC 3132, NGC 7139, NGC 6543 (in CVZ), NGC 650 G298.22-0.34 & 30 Dor (in CVZ). 5 min per AOT execution. Pointing and tracking specs listed in above comment can probably be relaxed somewhat for this IOC activity. PSS 11/16/01.
