Sequencer Site SIRTF IOC Activity c. 2002

CAID: MIPS-251 Title: Cosmic-ray limits on integration times for Ge:Ga MIPS arrays

System: MIPS Principal: alberto Deputy: dfrayer
Objective:
To determine the maximum useful MIPS
integration
time in the presence of Cosmic-ray hits.

Description:
While illuminating the Ge:Ga detectors at a
low
level, take images at the different allowed
integration
times to evalute the trade off between
"background limited"
and "not completely swamped with particle
hits,
aka Cosmic Rays". Photometry AORs for 70
and 160um
arrays at 3, 10 and 30sec [modified AOR] will
be
used.

Day:   0 Suggested Order:   P100

Must be preceded by these activities (list by CAID):   MIPS-245, MIPS-246, MIPS-250

Place in Schedule:   For 70um, the backgrd radiance muts be less than 1.e-12 W/cm2/sr (<12K). For 160um, the backgrd radiance must be less than 5.4e-13 W/cm2/sr (<6K).

Priority:   Necessary

Conditions

Maximum telescope temperature: 6.5 K

Minimum telescope temperature: 5.5 K

Should activity be repeated if focus changes?   No     Repeat if focus changes by 0 mm

Maximum absolute pointing uncertainty: 10 arcsec (1 sigma radial)

Maximum precision offset uncertainty: 1 arcsec  (1 sigma radial)

Observatory configuration: standard

Go/No Go criteria: solar activity at a reasonable level

Resources

Duration:   45 minutes

Real time downlink:   No

Data Volume (uncompressed): 115 Mbits

List Blocks, AORs, SERs, IERs, or unique sequences required (uplink): Photometry AOR for 3 and 10sec, modified AOR for 30 secs. Special data analysis.

List Analysis tools required (downlink):   Standard MIPS pipeline, image analysis package with statistical tools.

Outcome

Estimate of data turn around:   168 hours

Description: SUR data for 70 and 160um arrays will be analyzed to determine the contribution to the noise from radhits.

Can proceed in parallel with other activity: No

Must outcome be confirmed before next activity: No

Method of Confirmation:   Data analysis

Success criteria: Obtained data is downlinked and analyzed. Radhits are an unavoidable component of the space environment, so is good to understand as much as possible their effect on the arrays. We expect

Contingency plan:  Aquired required data using the default integrations times.
