Objective

Explore MIPS SED AOT parameter space.

Description

Execute MIPS SED AOT for a sensible range of parameters with a bright point source (70 µm flux standard) as the target. Valuable diagnostics on SED-mode performance and calibration can be gained if the chosen target is a flux calibration star. The SED AOT front end allows two integration times (3 and 10 seconds) as well as 4 different chop configurations (1, 2, 3, and -1 arcminutes). This task tests both integration times, all chop configurations, and multiple cycles in one of the chop configurations for both integration times (to look for any timing problems). Because the useful SED range is little more than 3 arcminutes, the on-source position can't be in the same place for both positive and negative chops (i.e., to get all the way from -1 arcminutes to +3, we'd need a 4-arcminute range). The on-source position is the same for all the positive chops (3100 SCANABS counts), but needs to be moved to 3204 SCANABS counts for the -1 arcminute chop to the sky position for the +1 arcminute chop (at 3204 SCANABS counts). Thus, the S/C will have to maintain two different locations for SED mode: one for positive chops and one for negative chops.

Data Collected

TESTS TO RUN:

AT ON-SOURCE POSITION 1:

  1. chop=1, itime=3, cycles=1 (mips_sed_itime3_chop1_cycle1.exp)
  2. chop=1, itime=10, cycles=1 (mips_sed_itime10_chop1_cycle1.exp)
  3. chop=1, itime=3, cycles=7 (mips_sed_itime3_chop1_cycle7.exp)
  4. chop=1, itime=10, cycles=7 (mips_sed_itime10_chop1_cycle7.exp)
  5. chop=2, itime=3, cycles=1 (mips_sed_itime3_chop2_cycle1.exp)
  6. chop=3, itime=3, cycles=1 (mips_sed_itime3_chop3_cycle1.exp)

AT ON-SOURCE POSITION 2:

  1. chop=-1, itime=3, cycles=1 (mips_sed_itime3_chop-1_cycle1.exp)

Output and Deliverable Products

Verification that the MIPS SED AOT executes properly over a range of parameters that observers will likely use to obtain their data.

Data Analysis

No specific analysis is needed other than visual and telemetry confirmation that the commanded sequences were executed with no problems. However, this IOC task can also be used to refine the SED-mode flux calibration and to check the repeatability and linearity of the observations. The recommended target for this task, therefore, is HD163588 (RA=17h53m31.73s, DEC=+56d52m21.5s). See MIPS-140 for a summary of the flux calibration.

Software Requirements

Actions Following Analysis

Confirmation that the AOT is valid, or a report describing the problems encountered will be issued. Analysis of the observations of the standard star observed are not central to this task, but will be used to help flux-calibrate SED mode, and to check on the repeatability of the observations. In addition, the multiple observations of the flux standard allow for an rough examination of the linearity of the array.

Failure Modes and Responses

If the SED AOT verification fails at any point, the command sequence that resulted in the problem needs to be corrected, or work arounds need to be formulated. Modifications to the AOT will need to be verified.
