Objective

Search for scattered light and glints from stars out of the field of view for MIPS.

Description

Using an extremely bright source, take a series of scan maps which cover a 3 deg by 3 deg region around the bright source. Additional photometry pointings may be taken at spots identified as likely glint locations. The selected source is IRAS 04361-6210, which is a variable M giant with a long visibility period. The 25 µm brightness is about 1600 Jy. Observer should note that IRAS 04330-6207 (25 µm flux of 12.1 Jy) will fall into the map also.

Data Collected

This task is accomplished by executing a set of 6 scan map AORs which are offset with respect to the map center (i.e. our bright source). Two of the mapping AORs are fast scan sets of 12 3 degree legs each, with forward and reverse offsets of 302". These AORs are centered at +/- 3600 arcsec from the bright source in the cross-scan direction. Another two sets of 5 - 3 deg fast scan legs are located +/- 1000" from the source. At the cross-scan position of the bright source, there are an additional two medium scan legs 1.5 deg in length. They are centered +/- 1 deg in the scan direction from the source. The current total observing time is 9 hours. An additional 6 hours was budgeted for this task, some of which may be spent in photometry of suspicious glint targets. The exposure times are 3 - 4 seconds per DCE for scan map.
