Sequencer Site SIRTF IOC Activity c. 2002

CAID: MIPS-340 Title: Ultimate Scattered Light Levels #1

System: MIPS Principal: mrieke Deputy: jkeene
Objective:
Determine the level of scattered background
light
within MIPS including when the scan mirror is
moved to the "dark" position and when a
source is
place in the FOV. This test will indicate
how well the total power mode will work. It will
also indicate whether source glints are
present.
This test is the 24um portion.

Description:
Part 1:	Diffuse light scattered into MIPS
Point at a high background location (Galactic
plane preferably).
Place the 24um array into the dark with the
scan
mirror.
Take 30 30-second integrations.
Part 2: Observe a star which will not saturate
in
3 seconds -- flux <=2 Jy at 24um. Take a total
of
40 cycles of standard small field photometry
mode
AOR using 3 second expsoures.
Part 3:	Scattered light from stars adjacent to
the
field of view.
Perform the following test for a bright star
which
would saturate if viewed directly.
Place the star 20" outside the FOV.
Take 30-second integrations with the 24um
array
while stepping the star by 15" along the side
of the 24um array. Take 3 exposures at each
step
position.
Repeat moving the star along the other 3
sides of
the array.

Must be preceded by these activities (list by CAID):   MIPS-950H

Place in Schedule:   Can begin after aperture door is opened, basic MIPS functionality is checked, and after the scattered background light monitor is complete.

Priority:   Desired

Conditions

Maximum telescope temperature: 6.5 K

Minimum telescope temperature: 5.5 K

Should activity be repeated if focus changes?   Yes     Repeat if focus changes by 0 mm

Maximum absolute pointing uncertainty: 2 arcsec (1 sigma radial)

Maximum precision offset uncertainty: 1 arcsec  (1 sigma radial)

Observatory configuration: Point at Galactic plane for part 1.Point at a bright star for part 2.

Go/No Go criteria: Scan mirror and array readouts must be functional.

Resources

Duration:   70 minutes

Real time downlink:   No

Data Volume (uncompressed): 900 Mbits

List Blocks, AORs, SERs, IERs, or unique sequences required (uplink): Should use the same IER as for measuring dark current for parts 1 and 3, use photometry mode AOR for part 3.

List Analysis tools required (downlink):

Outcome

Estimate of data turn around:   48 hours

Description: Will understand scattered light levels within MIPS

Can proceed in parallel with other activity: No

Must outcome be confirmed before next activity: No

Method of Confirmation:   data analysis

Success criteria: Obtained unsaturated data.

Contingency plan:  If an unusually high background is observed, an analysis of the MIPS/CTA optical path will be needed.

Additional Comments:
It might be desirable to expand this test either by taking finer steps and/or by taking more exposures at each step position.
