Sequencer Site SIRTF IOC Activity c. 2002

CAID: MIPS-341 Title: Ultimate Scattered Light Levels #2

System: MIPS Principal: mrieke Deputy: jkeene
Objective:
This is the 70um portion of the test. See
MIPS-340 for more details.

Description:
Part 1: Diffuse light scattered into MIPS
Point at a high sky backgrounfd region
(preferably
the Galactic Plane).
Perform a thermal anneal on the 70-um array.
Place the 70um-array into the first 70um dark
position.
Take 30 10-second integraqtions.
Move the scan mirror to the other 70um dark
position.
Take 30 10-second integrations.
Part 2: Use a star which will not saturate in a
3 second exposure -- flux < 2.5 Jy at 70um.
Execute this test using both fine and default
scales at 70um. Take two sets of 20 cycles
per
plate scale of the small field photometry AOR
using 3 second exposures.
Part 3: Scattered light from stars adjacent to
the
field of view.
Repeat the following tests for a bright star
which
would saturate if viewed directly.
Take 10-second integrations with the 70um
array
while stepping a star by 30" along the side of
the array projected onto the sky. Take 6
exposures
at each step position.
Repeat for the other three sides of the array.

Must be preceded by these activities (list by CAID):   MIPS-950H

Place in Schedule:   Can begin after aperture door is opened, basic MIPS functionality is checked, and after the scattered background monitor is complete.

Priority:   Desired

Conditions

Maximum telescope temperature: 6.5 K

Minimum telescope temperature: 5.5 K

Should activity be repeated if focus changes?   Yes     Repeat if focus changes by 0 mm

Maximum absolute pointing uncertainty: 2 arcsec (1 sigma radial)

Maximum precision offset uncertainty: 1 arcsec  (1 sigma radial)

Observatory configuration: Point at Galactic Plane for Part 1, point at bright star for part 2

Go/No Go criteria: Scan mirror and array readouts must be functional

Duration:   70 minutes

Real time downlink:   No

Data Volume (uncompressed): 900 Mbits

List Blocks, AORs, SERs, IERs, or unique sequences required (uplink): Can use the regular IER for measuring dark current.

List Analysis tools required (downlink):

Outcome

Estimate of data turn around:   48 hours

Description: Will understand scattered light levels within MIPS.

Can proceed in parallel with other activity: No

Must outcome be confirmed before next activity: No

Method of Confirmation:   data analysis

Success criteria: Obtained unsaturated data.

Contingency plan:  If an unusually high background is observed, an analysis of the MIPS/CTA optical path will be needed.
