Objective

The purpose of this task is to determine the dark current and read noise for the 70µm array for each IOC/SV campaign.

Description

Point to the primary 70µm dark position (#1) and take dark measurements using the 10 sec Dark IER and read noise measurements using the 10 sec Read Noise IER.

Point to the secondary 70µm dark position (#2) and take dark measurements using the 10 sec Dark IER and read noise measurements using the 10 sec Read Noise IER.

Data Collected

The dark current dataset will contain 35, 10 second DCEs with stim flashes every 11 DCEs. The two 70µm dark positions will result in two such datasets. The read noise dataset will contain 50, 10 second DCEs with no stim flashes. The two 70µm dark positions will result in two such datasets. The IER for this task is mips_ier911.exp.

The 35 dark current DCEs should be packed into a single FITS file with extensions. This would generate two such FITS files for this task as there are two dark positions for the 70µm array. The 50 read noise DCEs should be packed into a single FITS file with extensions. This would generate two such FITS files for this task as there are two dark positions for the 70µm array.

Output and Deliverable Products

The output of the dark current dataset is a dark current calibration image. The average dark current should also be tabulated and tracked from campaign to campaign.

The output of the read noise dataset is a read noise calibration image. The average read noise should also be tabulated and tracked from campaign to campaign.

As a meta task associated with each execution of this task, variability of the dark current and read noise measurements on average and pixel-by-pixel should be examined. The resulting measured level of this variability will be used to determine if dark current and read noise measurements are required in every MIPS campaign or if data from multiple campaigns can be averaged to produce "super" dark current and read noise calibration images.

Data Analysis

The dark current dataset will be run through mips_sloper, mips_caler, and mips_enhancer with the appropriate switches. The script 'makedark' will be used to ensure that all the appropriate switches are set to these three programs. The dark calibration image will be created by mips_enhancer and will include uncertainties. The IDL program 'avedark' will be used to merge the two dark positions into a single calibration image and determine the dark current averaged over the entire array.

The read noise dataset will be run through mips_sloper. The resulting output will be used as input to the IDL program 'get_rdnoise.pro'. This program will output the read noise calibration image as well as a suitably averaged read noise measurment (over the entire array).

Actions Following Analysis

Ensure that the dark current and read noise calibration images are placed in the appropriate place for distribution. This is to allow other IOC tasks to use these calibration images.

Failure Modes and Responses

If the dark current or read noise datasets are unsuitable for creation of the appropriate calibration images, then calibration images from previous or future campaigns can be used instead.

If this task fails often, then the reason of the failure needs to be determined and corrected.
